Newman Summary

Newman is a city located in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 10,224 at the 2010 census, up from 7,093 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Newman was founded in 1888 by Simon Newman, a Swiss immigrant who had come to California in 1875. He purchased land in the area and began to develop it for farming. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1957.

Geography

Newman is located at 37°19′17″N 121°1′17″W (37.3213, -121.0214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Newman is a small agricultural community, with the majority of its economy based on farming. The city is home to a variety of crops, including almonds, walnuts, tomatoes, and corn. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,093 people, 2,099 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,192.2/km2). There were 2,179 housing units at an average density of 937.2 per square mile (362.3/km2). The average household size was 3.37 and the average family size was 3.76.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
