According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all of it land.
History
Morada was originally part of the Rancho del Paso Mexican land grant. The area was settled in the late 1800s by Portuguese immigrants who were attracted to the area by the abundance of wild game and the fertile soil. The name Morada is derived from the Portuguese word for “dwelling” or “home”.
The first post office opened in Morada in 1891. The town was incorporated in 1911, but the incorporation was dissolved in 1921.
Economy
The economy of Morada is largely based on agriculture. The area is known for its production of walnuts, almonds, and other tree nuts. Other crops grown in the area include tomatoes, corn, and hay.
The area is also home to several wineries and vineyards as well as a number of small businesses
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,072 people, 2,845 households, and 2,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,876.3 people per square mile (724.7/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 683.2 per square mile (263.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 25.2% from other races, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $46,944. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
