Larkspur Summary
Larkspur is a city located in Marin County, California, United States, just north of San Francisco. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located in the North Bay region. The population was 11,926 at the 2010 census. Larkspur is located 3 miles (4.8 km) south of San Rafael, at an elevation of 43 feet (13 m).
History
Larkspur was originally part of the Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, a Mexican land grant given to John Reed in 1834. The area was part of the original 1838 Mexican land grant of Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio granted to John Reed. In 1867, Reed sold his land to William A. Barrett, who in turn sold it to a San Francisco financier, Charles Lux. Lux bought the land for a dairy farm and cattle ranch. He later sold it to a group of investors who called themselves "The Larkspur Land and Improvement Company". The company subdivided the land and began selling lots, and the city of Larkspur was born.
The city was named after the larkspur flower, which grows in abundance in the area. The first post office was established in 1891. The city was incorporated in 1908.
Geography
Larkspur is located at 37°59′03″N 122°30′48″W (37.984167, -122.513333). It is located on the western edge of Marin County, adjacent to San Francisco Bay. It is bordered by Corte Madera to the north, San Rafael to the east, and Greenbrae to the south.

Larkspur is a residential community with a strong commercial base. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including technology, retail, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Autodesk, Inc., and the corporate offices of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.
