South Whittier Summary

South Whittier is a census-designated place located in Los Angeles County, California. It is located in the southeastern portion of the county, just south of the city of Whittier. The population was 58,736 at the 2010 census, up from 57,260 at the 2000 census.

History

The area now known as South Whittier was originally inhabited by the Tongva Native American tribe. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Spanish missionaries, who established the San Gabriel Mission in 1771. The area was later part of the Rancho Los Nietos, a large Spanish land grant.
In the late 19th century, the area was subdivided and sold off to settlers. The area was known as South Santa Fe, and was annexed by the city of Whittier in 1898. The area was officially renamed South Whittier in the 1950s.

Geography

South Whittier is located at 33°58'25"N 118°2'25"W (33.973611, -118.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all of it land.

Economy

South Whittier is a primarily residential community, with no major industries or businesses located within its boundaries. The primary economic activity is retail, with a number of small businesses located along the main thoroughfares.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 58,736 people, 17,945 households, and 14,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 13,945.3 people per square mile (5,381.2/km2). There were 18,541 housing units at an average density of 4,420.3 per square mile (1,704.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 53.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 28.3% from other races, and 5.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 63.7% of the population.
There were 17,945 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 13.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.27 and the average family size was 3.58.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,945. About 11.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
