Sanger Summary
Sanger is a city located in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 24,270 at the 2010 census, up from 18,731 at the 2000 census. Sanger is located 13 miles (21 km) east-southeast of Fresno, at an elevation of 371 feet (113 m).
Geography
Sanger is located at 36°45′39″N 119°26′17″W (36.7607, -119.4381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), all of it land.
History
Sanger was founded in 1872 by John Sanger, a rancher from Indiana. He purchased land from the Southern Pacific Railroad and established a large cattle ranch. The town was named after him.
In 1887 the first post office was established in Sanger The town was incorporated in 1911
Economy
Sanger is a major agricultural center in the San Joaquin Valley. The city is home to many large farms and ranches, as well as several food processing plants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18,731 people, 5,945 households, and 4,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,521.2 people per square mile (1,362.2/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 1,153.2 per square mile (445.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.2% White, 1.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 30.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.2% of the population.
There were 5,945 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.51.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $33,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,917. About 19.7% of families and 22.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.7% of those under age 18 and 11.7% of those age 65 or over.
