San Dimas Summary

San Dimas is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Gabriel Valley, approximately 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 33,371 at the 2010 census, up from 31,371 at the 2000 census. The city is named after San Dismas, the repentant thief in the Bible.

History

The area was originally occupied by the Tongva Native American tribe. The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish, who arrived in 1769 and named it San Dismas. The area was part of the Rancho San Jose, granted to the Pico family in 1837. In 1853, the area was purchased by John Rains and his wife Maria Merced, who renamed it Rains Ranch. The city was incorporated in 1960.

Geography

San Dimas is located at 34°7′54″N 117°48′25″W (34.1317, -117.8069). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

San Dimas is home to several large businesses, including the San Dimas Medical Center, San Dimas Technology Center, and San Dimas Corporate Center. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 33,371 people, 11,521 households, and 8,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,814.3 people per square mile (1,471.2/km2). There were 11,934 housing units at an average density of 1,370.7 per square mile (529.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 2.4% African American, 0.7% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 13.3% from other races, and 4.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.2% of the population.
There were 11,521 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,872, and the median income for a family was $68,971. Males had a median income of $48,837 versus $35,836 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.
