Reedley Summary
Reedley is a city located in Fresno County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 22 miles east of Fresno, at an elevation of 348 feet. The population was 24,194 at the 2010 census.
History
Reedley was founded in 1891 by Thomas Law Reed, a former Union Army officer who had served in the Civil War. He purchased land from the Southern Pacific Railroad and established a post office, which he named after himself. The town grew rapidly, and by the early 1900s, it had become a major agricultural center. The city was incorporated in 1913.
Geography
Reedley is located at 36°30'25" North, 119°31'17" West (36.506944, -119.521389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Reedley is a major agricultural center, with a variety of crops grown in the area. The city is home to a number of food processing plants, including the largest raisin processing plant in the world. Other industries in the city include furniture manufacturing, metal fabrication, and printing.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 22,636 people, 6,845 households, and 5,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,232.2 people per square mile (2,015.2/km²). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,639.2 per square mile (631.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 37.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 63.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.27 and the average family size was 3.81.
In the city, the population was spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
