Red Bluff Summary

Red Bluff is a city located in Tehama County, California, United States. It is situated along the Sacramento River, approximately 30 miles south of Redding and 40 miles north of Chico. The population was 14,076 at the 2010 census, up from 13,147 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tehama County.

History

The area around Red Bluff was originally inhabited by the Nomlaki people, a branch of the Wintun Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1844, and the town was founded in 1876. The city was named after the red bluffs that line the banks of the Sacramento River.
In the late 19th century, Red Bluff was a major stop on the Central Pacific Railroad, and the city grew rapidly. The railroad brought in many new settlers, and the town soon became a center for agriculture and ranching.

Red Bluff is located at 40°10′36″N 122°14′17″W (40.176667, -122.238056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.6 square miles (22.3 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22.2 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.23%) is water.

Red Bluff is a major agricultural center in the Sacramento Valley. The city is home to a variety of crops, including walnuts, almonds, prunes, and olives. The city is also home to a number of livestock operations, including cattle, sheep, and goats.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 13,147 people, 4,845 households, and 3,231 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 5,067 housing units at an average density of 590.3 per square mile (228.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 78.2% White, 0.7% African American, 2.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 14.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.6% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $36,921. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,890. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.3% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
