Rancho San Diego Summary

Rancho San Diego is a census-designated place (CDP) located in San Diego County, California. It is situated in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, approximately 20 miles east of downtown San Diego. The population was 21,208 at the 2010 census, up from 20,155 at the 2000 census.

History

Rancho San Diego was originally part of a Mexican land grant known as Rancho San Diego de Alcala, which was granted to Juan Maria Osuna in 1845. The land was used for cattle grazing and farming. In the late 19th century, the area was subdivided and sold to settlers. The community was known as Jamacha until the 1950s, when it was renamed Rancho San Diego.

Geography

Rancho San Diego is located at 32°45'25" North, 116°59'45" West (32.756944, -116.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Rancho San Diego is home to several large employers, including the Grossmont Union High School District, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, and the San Diego County Water Authority. The area is also home to several shopping centers, including the Rancho San Diego Towne Center, which features a variety of stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 20,155 people, 6,845 households, and 5,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,420.3 people per square mile (935.2/km2). There were 7,039 housing units at an average density of 848.3 per square mile (327.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 77.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 8.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.31.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $68,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
