Oildale Summary

Oildale is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Kern County, California, United States. It is located in the San Joaquin Valley, just north of Bakersfield. The population was 24,818 at the 2010 census, up from 21,851 at the 2000 census.

History

Oildale was founded in the late 19th century as an oil-producing community. The first oil well was drilled in 1894, and the area quickly became a major oil-producing region. The town was named after the oil wells that were located in the area. The first post office was established in 1898.
In the early 20th century, Oildale was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people. The town had a school, a church, a general store, and several other businesses.
In the 1950s, the oil industry began to decline in the area, and the population of Oildale began to decline as well. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to just over 1,000 people.

Geography

Oildale is located at 35°25'25" North, 119°1'25" West (35.423, -119.023). It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, just north of Bakersfield. The CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Oildale's economy is largely based on oil production. The town is home to several oil companies, including Chevron, Occidental Petroleum, and Aera Energy. The oil industry is the main source of employment in the area.
In addition to oil production, Oildale is also home to several other businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,818 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,919.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 4.3% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 21.2% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 39.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,945. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
