North El Monte Summary

North El Monte is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Los Angeles County, California. It is situated in the San Gabriel Valley, just east of the city of El Monte. The population of North El Monte was 8,064 at the 2010 census, up from 7,579 at the 2000 census.

History

North El Monte was originally part of the Rancho San Antonio land grant, which was granted to Antonio Maria Lugo in 1845. The area was later subdivided and sold to settlers in the late 19th century. The area was known as “Lugonia” until the early 20th century, when it was renamed North El Monte.

Geography

North El Monte is located at 34°6′17″N 118°2′17″W (34.104722, -118.038333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

North El Monte is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the area. The primary industries in the area are retail, construction, and manufacturing. The largest employers in the area are the El Monte Union High School District, the City of El Monte, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,579 people, 2,541 households, and 1,945 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,541.3 people per square mile (2,521.2/km2). There were 2,637 housing units at an average density of 2,258.2 per square mile (873.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 1.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 28.2% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 64.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 10.2% of families and 12.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
