History
Loyalton was founded in 1869 by William B. Ide, a former California governor. Ide named the town after his friend, Loyalton B. Ide, who was a prominent lawyer in San Francisco. The town was originally a mining camp, and the first post office was established in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Loyalton was a major center for the timber industry. The town was also home to a large number of Chinese immigrants who worked in the mines and lumber mills.
Geography
Loyalton is located in the Sierra Valley, at an elevation of 4,719 feet (1,439 m). The town is situated on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and is surrounded by the Plumas National Forest.
The town is located at the intersection of State Route 49 and State Route 70. It is approximately 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Marysville, California, and 80 miles (129 km) northwest of Reno, Nevada.
