Lanare Summary

Lanare is a small unincorporated community located in Fresno County, California. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 8 miles east of the city of Fresno. The population of Lanare was estimated to be 1,845 in 2019.

History

Lanare was founded in 1891 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Selma. The settlers named the town after the nearby Lanare Creek, which was named after a local Native American chief. The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were cotton, wheat, and barley.
In the early 1900s, Lanare began to experience a population boom as more people moved to the area to take advantage of the fertile soil and mild climate. The town was incorporated in 1912, and the first mayor was elected in 1913.
In the 1920s, Lanare experienced a period of rapid growth as the population increased and new businesses opened. The town was home to several stores, a bank, a post office, a hotel, and a movie theater.
