Lakeland Village Summary

Lakeland Village is a census-designated place located in Riverside County, California. It is situated in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains, about 10 miles east of the city of Temecula. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census, up from 3,002 at the 2000 census.

History

The area that is now Lakeland Village was originally inhabited by the Cahuilla Indians. The first Europeans to settle in the area were the Spanish, who established the Rancho Temecula in 1844. The rancho was later divided into smaller parcels, and in 1882, the Lakeland Village area was purchased by the Lake family. The Lake family built a small resort on the property, which became known as Lakeland Village.

Geography

Lakeland Village is located at 33°33'25"N, 117°7'25"W (33.556944, -117.123611). It is situated in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains, about 10 miles east of the city of Temecula. The elevation of Lakeland Village is 1,845 feet (562 m).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lakeland Village is largely based on tourism. The area is home to several resorts, including the Lakeland Village Resort, which offers a variety of recreational activities, such as golf, tennis, and swimming. The area also has several restaurants, shops, and other businesses catering to tourists.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,002 people, 1,093 households, and 817 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 717.3 people per square mile (277.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 283.3 per square mile (109.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
