Kelseyville is a small town located in Lake County, California, United States. It is situated in the Clear Lake Valley, about 8 miles (13 km) south of Clear Lake, and about 20 miles (32 km) north of Calistoga. The population was 3,353 at the 2010 census, up from 2,928 at the 2000 census.

History

Kelseyville was founded in 1858 by William Henry Kelsey, a former miner from Michigan. He named the town after himself and established a post office in 1859. The town was incorporated in 1867.
Kelseyville was an important stop on the stagecoach route between Calistoga and Clear Lake. It was also the site of a ferry crossing of the Clear Lake. The town was a center of commerce for the surrounding agricultural area, and was home to several stores, hotels, and saloons.

Geography

Kelseyville is located at 38°58′17″N 122°51′17″W (38.971445, -122.854720). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Kelseyville is a rural community with a strong agricultural base. The town is home to several wineries, including the award-winning Steele Wines. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,928 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,269.3 people per square mile (489.3/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 507.3 per square mile (195.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 81.2% White, 0.7% African American, 2.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 11.3% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
