Independence Summary

Independence is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. It is situated in the Owens Valley, near the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range. The town is located at the base of the White Mountains, and is the gateway to the Owens Valley. The population of Independence was 669 at the 2010 census.

History

Independence was founded in 1861 by a group of miners who were looking for gold in the area. The town was originally called "Fremont", but was later changed to "Independence" in honor of the Fourth of July. The town was incorporated in 1877.
