Holtville is a small city located in Imperial County, California, United States. It is situated in the Imperial Valley, about 10 miles (16 km) east of El Centro. The population was 5,939 at the 2010 census, up from 5,612 at the 2000 census.

History

Holtville was founded in 1906 by W.F. Holt, who purchased the land from the Southern Pacific Railroad. The city was named after him and incorporated in 1908. Holtville was the first city in Imperial County to incorporate.
Holtville was the site of the first successful irrigation project in the Imperial Valley. The project was completed in 1909 and was the first to bring water from the Colorado River to the Imperial Valley. This project was instrumental in the development of the Imperial Valley and the growth of Holtville.

Geography

Holtville is located at 32°49′N 115°37′W (32.8133, -115.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Holtville’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to a number of large farms and agricultural businesses, including the Holtville Packing Company, which is one of the largest tomato packing companies in the United States.
The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and service businesses, including a number of automotive repair shops, a furniture store, and a number of restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,612 people, 1,845 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,541.2 people per square mile (981.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 925.2 per square mile (357.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 27.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 64.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $33,906. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
