Hawaiian Gardens Summary

Hawaiian Gardens is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 14,254 at the 2010 census, down from 14,779 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest city in Los Angeles County by population.

History

Hawaiian Gardens was founded in 1959 by a group of developers who wanted to create a Hawaiian-themed community. The city was incorporated in 1964 and was named after the Hawaiian Gardens Casino, which opened in the same year. The casino was the first legal card club in Los Angeles County and is still in operation today.

Geography

Hawaiian Gardens is located at 33°49′39″N 118°3′24″W (33.827500, -118.056667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hawaiian Gardens is a predominantly residential city, with a small commercial district located along Carson Street. The city is home to the Hawaiian Gardens Casino, which is the largest card club in the state of California. The casino employs over 1,000 people and generates millions of dollars in tax revenue for the city.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 14,779 people, 4,719 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 14,845.3 people per square mile (5,735.2/km2). There were 4,919 housing units at an average density of 4,919.0 per square mile (1,892.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 44.7% White, 2.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 28.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 17.3% from other races, and 6.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 43.2% of the population.
There were 4,719 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.54.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,921, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,945. About 11.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
