Fort Jones was founded in 1852 by Captain John C. Jones, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. He named the town after himself and established a military post there. In the late 19th century, Fort Jones was a major stop on the stagecoach route between Yreka and Redding. The town was also a major supply center for miners during the California Gold Rush.
