East Hemet Summary

Hemat, CA is a small city located in Riverside County, California. It is situated in the San Jacinto Valley, approximately 10 miles east of the city of Riverside. The city is bordered by the San Jacinto Mountains to the north, the San Bernardino Mountains to the east, and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south. The population of East Hemet was 24,817 at the 2010 census, up from 20,859 at the 2000 census.

History

East Hemet was founded in 1887 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The city was originally named “Eastside”, but was later changed to “East Hemet” in honor of the nearby city of Hemet. The city was incorporated in 1906 and has since grown to become a thriving community.

Geography

East Hemet is located at 33°45′N 116°59′W (33.75, -116.98). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

East Hemet is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the city. The city is home to several large employers, including the Hemet Unified School District, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, and the San Jacinto Valley Medical Center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,817 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,988.3 people per square mile (1,155.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 1,150.3 per square mile (444.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 4.3% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 20.2% from other races, and 4.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $41,919. Males had a median income of $31,919 versus $25,913 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,845. About 13.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
