Earlimart Summary
Earlimart is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Tulare County, California, United States. The population was 8,445 at the 2010 census, up from 6,584 at the 2000 census. Earlimart is located in the San Joaquin Valley, 8 miles (13 km) south of Pixley, at an elevation of 246 feet (75 m).
History
Earlimart was founded in the early 1900s by the Earlimart family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was named after the family’s patriarch, John Earlimart. The Earlimart family owned a large ranch in the area, and the town grew up around it.
In the early 1900s, the town was a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought in new settlers and businesses, and the town grew rapidly. By the 1920s, Earlimart had become a thriving agricultural community.
Geography
Earlimart is located at 36°17′17″N 119°17′17″W (36.288, -119.288). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Earlimart’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms and ranches, and the surrounding area is known for its production of grapes, cotton, and other crops.
The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, and other retail establishments.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,584 people, 1,945 households, and 1,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,945.3 people per square mile (1,137.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 919.2 per square mile (354.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 37.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 64.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.37 and the average family size was 3.77.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 34.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $27,813. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $9,845. About 22.2% of families and 25.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
