Duarte Summary
Duarte is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Gabriel Valley, at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The population of Duarte was 21,486 at the 2010 census, up from 20,382 at the 2000 census.
History
Duarte was founded in 1857 by Andres Duarte, a Mexican rancher from the nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1957.
Geography
Duarte is located at 34°08′25″N 117°57′42″W (34.140278, -117.961667). It lies in the San Gabriel Valley, at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The city is bordered by the cities of Bradbury to the north, Monrovia to the east, Irwindale to the south, and Azusa and Glendora to the west.

Economy
Duarte is home to several large companies, including City of Hope National Medical Center, which is one of the world's leading research and treatment centers for cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases. The city is also home to Duarte Nursery, the largest nursery in the United States.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 21,486 people, 6,635 households, and 5,186 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,186.8 people per square mile (1,228.2/km2). There were 6,945 housing units at an average density of 1,033.7 per square mile (399.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.3% White, 4.1% African American, 1.3% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 25.2% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 50.2% of the population.
There were 6,635 households, out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.21 and the average family size was 3.67.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.4% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,735, and the median income for a family was $55,084. Males had a median income of $40,921 versus $31,831 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,183. About 8.9% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.
