Geography

Desert View Highlands is located at 33°48'25"N 116°17'17"W (33.806944, -116.288333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Desert View Highlands was established in the late 1950s as a residential development. The area was originally part of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, but was sold to developers in the 1950s. The area was developed as a residential community, with homes built on large lots.

Economy

The economy of Desert View Highlands is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The area is home to several resorts and golf courses, as well as a number of farms and ranches. The area is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 441.3 people per square mile (170.6/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 178.2 per square mile (68.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 21.2% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 10.2% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
