Cotati is a small city located in Sonoma County, California, United States. It is situated about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the city of Santa Rosa and 55 miles (89 km) north of San Francisco. The population was 7,265 at the 2010 census, up from 5,903 at the 2000 census.
History
The area around what is now the City of Cotati was originally inhabited by the Coast Miwok Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1850s, and the town was officially founded in 1857. The town was named after the Coast Miwok word for “land of the redwood”.
In the late 19th century, Cotati was a small farming community, with a population of just over 200 people. The town was known for its production of hops, which were used in the brewing of beer. The hop industry in Cotati declined in the early 20th century, and the town’s population began to decline as well.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence, as the population began to grow again. The town was incorporated in 1958, and the population continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

Cotati is located at 38°20′N 122°45′W (38.33, -122.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2), all of it land.
Cotati is located in the Sonoma Valley, and is surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards. The city is located near the Petaluma River, and is just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean.
Economy
Cotati’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several wineries, and is a popular destination for wine tasting. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and art galleries.
The city is also home to Sonoma State University, which is located just outside of the city limits. The university is a major employer in the area, and provides jobs for many of the city’s residents.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,265 people, 2,945 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,037.3 people per square mile (1,561.2/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 1,711.2 per square mile (661.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 11.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 8.2% from other races, and 4.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.2% of the population.
There were 2,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $63,813. Males had a median income of $45,890 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
