Contra Costa Centre Summary

Contra Costa Centre, California is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Contra Costa County, California. It is situated in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, and is part of the larger city of Walnut Creek. As of the 2010 census, the population of Contra Costa Centre was 8,845.

History

Contra Costa Centre was originally part of the Rancho Monte del Diablo Mexican land grant. The area was first settled in the mid-1800s by ranchers and farmers. In the early 1900s, the area was developed as a residential community, and the Contra Costa Centre post office was established in 1915.
In the 1950s, Contra Costa Centre began to experience rapid growth as the population of the San Francisco Bay Area increased. The area was annexed by the city of Walnut Creek in 1959, and the Contra Costa Centre post office was closed in 1960.

Geography

Contra Costa Centre is located at 37°54'25"N 122°02'45"W (37.9069, -122.0457). It is situated in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, and is part of the larger city of Walnut Creek. The CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of which is land.

Economy

Contra Costa Centre is primarily a residential community, but it also has a number of businesses and services. The area is home to several shopping centers, including the Contra Costa Centre Shopping Center, which features a variety of stores and restaurants. The area also has a number of professional offices, including medical and dental offices, as well as financial and legal services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,741.3 people per square mile (2,607.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 3,006.2 per square mile (1,161.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 11.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $90,945, and the median income for a family was $106,945. Males had a median income of $71,945 versus $50,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $45,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
