Burlingame Summary

Burlingame is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States, just south of San Francisco. It is a suburb of San Francisco and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 28,806 at the 2010 census.

History

Burlingame was founded in 1872 by Anson Burlingame, a San Francisco attorney. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1908.

Geography

Burlingame is located at 37°33′N 122°17′W (37.55, -122.29). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.1 square miles (15.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Burlingame is a major center for business and industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is home to many corporate headquarters, including Visa, Sony, Oracle, and Charles Schwab. The city is also home to a number of technology companies, such as Google, Apple, and Yahoo.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 28,806 people, 11,845 households, and 7,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,717.3 people per square mile (1,822.2/km2). There were 12,541 housing units at an average density of 2,053.3 per square mile (792.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 17.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.8% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.9% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $90,837, and the median income for a family was $117,837. Males had a median income of $71,919 versus $51,919 for females. The per capita income for the city was $54,945. About 3.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
