History

Beaumont was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from San Bernardino. The city was named after the French city of Beaumont-sur-Oise, which was the birthplace of one of the settlers, Louis Beaumont. The city was incorporated in 1912 and has since grown to become a major city in Riverside County.

Geography

Beaumont is located at 33°56'N, 116°58'W (33.937, -116.967). It is situated in the San Gorgonio Pass, between the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Jacinto Mountains. The city has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Climate

Beaumont has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The average annual temperature is 68°F, with an average high of 91°F in the summer and an average low of 45°F in the winter. The average annual precipitation is 11.3 inches.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 36,877 people, 11,945 households, and 8,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 20.3% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.

Economy

Beaumont is a major economic center in Riverside County. The city is home to several major employers, including the Beaumont Unified School District, the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District, the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, and the San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several shopping centers and retail outlets. The city is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for many of the city's residents.
