Avalon Summary

Avalon is a small city located on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles, California. It is the only incorporated city on the island and is the southernmost city in Los Angeles County. Avalon is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean.

History

Avalon was first settled in 1864 by George Shatto, a real estate developer from the mainland. He purchased the island from the Catalina Island Company and named it Avalon after the mythical island in the Arthurian legend. Shatto built a hotel and a wharf, and the island quickly became a popular tourist destination. In 1913, the city of Avalon was incorporated, and it has remained a popular tourist destination ever since.

Geography

Avalon is located on Santa Catalina Island, which is part of the Channel Islands archipelago off the coast of Los Angeles. The island is 22 miles long and 8 miles wide, and is home to a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, foxes, and bison. The city of Avalon is located on the eastern side of the island, and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.

Economy

Avalon’s economy is largely based on tourism. The city is home to a variety of hotels, restaurants, and shops, as well as a casino and a golf course. The island is also home to a variety of outdoor activities, such as fishing, sailing, and hiking. In addition, the island is home to a variety of marine life, making it a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Avalon was 3,728. The population is largely white (83.3%), with a small percentage of Hispanic or Latino (7.2%) and Asian (2.2%) residents.
