Alta Sierra Summary

Alta Sierra is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Nevada County, California, United States. It is situated in the Sierra Nevada foothills, approximately 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Grass Valley and 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Nevada City. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census, up from 2,717 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Alta Sierra is located at 39°14′17″N 121°2′17″W (39.238133, -121.038139). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

History

The area was first settled in the 1850s by miners and ranchers. The town was originally known as "Mountain House" and was later renamed "Alta Sierra" in the early 1900s. The name is derived from the Spanish words for "high mountain".

The town was incorporated in 1947 and has since grown to become a popular residential community

Economy

The economy of Alta Sierra is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several wineries, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,072 households, and 817 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 327.3 people per square mile (126.3/km2). There were 1,127 housing units at an average density of 135.7 per square mile (52.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 32.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $67,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
