Villas Summary
Villas is a small borough located in Cape May County, New Jersey. It is situated on the southern tip of the state, just north of Wildwood and south of Ocean City. The borough is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Delaware Bay to the west. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 1,845.
History
Villas was originally part of Lower Township, which was established in 1723. The area was known as “The Villas” and was a popular summer destination for wealthy Philadelphians. In 1894, the area was incorporated as a borough and named Villas.
Geography
Villas is located at 39°2'25"N 74°45'45"W (39.040278, -74.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of which is land.
Economy
Villas is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The primary industries are tourism and fishing. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, convenience stores, and a few small retail stores.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,039.4 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 930.6 per square mile (359.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
