Rockaway Borough is a small borough located in Morris County, New Jersey. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, about 25 miles west of New York City. The borough is bordered by the towns of Denville, Parsippany-Troy Hills, and Mount Arlington. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 6,438.

History

The area that is now Rockaway Borough was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Horseneck Tract, which was a parcel of land that was purchased from the Native Americans in 1713. The area was then part of the Township of Hanover, which was established in 1720.
In 1844, the area was incorporated as the Borough of Rockaway. The name of the borough is derived from the Rockaway River, which runs through the area. The borough was originally a farming community, but it began to develop into a residential community in the late 19th century.

Geography

Rockaway Borough is located at 40°53'N 74°31'W (40.88, -74.52). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of which is land.

There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 1,179.2 per square mile (455.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $68,958, and the median income for a family was $81,944. Males had a median income of $51,919 versus $41,964 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $31,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
