Hamilton Square Summary

Hamilton Square is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Mercer County, New Jersey. It is located within the township of Hamilton, which is part of the Trenton metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 8,817.

Geography

Hamilton Square is located at 40°14'45" North, 74°41'17" West (40.245833, -74.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles, all of which is land.

History

The area that is now Hamilton Square was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was originally part of Nottingham Township, which was established in 1688. In 1790, the area was split off from Nottingham Township and became part of Hamilton Township.
The area was originally known as White Horse, after a tavern of the same name that was located in the area. In 1859, the area was renamed Hamilton Square after Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury.

Economy

The economy of Hamilton Square is largely based on retail and services. The area is home to several shopping centers, including the Hamilton Square Shopping Center, the Hamilton Marketplace, and the Hamilton Towne Center. The area is also home to several restaurants, banks, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 8,817 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,845.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,917, and the median income for a family was $76,917. Males had a median income of $51,917 versus $41,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $30,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
