Woodbine Borough is a small borough located in Cape May County, New Jersey. It is situated on the southern tip of the state, just north of the Atlantic Ocean. The borough is bordered by the towns of Dennis Township, Upper Township, and Sea Isle City. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 1,845.
History
Woodbine Borough was incorporated in 1894 from portions of Dennis Township. The borough was named after the Woodbine Hotel, which was built in 1876 and was the first hotel in the area. The hotel was named after the woodbine vine, which was abundant in the area.
The borough was originally a farming community, but it began to develop into a resort town in the late 19th century. The Woodbine Hotel was a popular destination for vacationers, and the town soon became known as a summer resort.
Geography
Woodbine Borough is located at 39°14'N 74°51'W (39.23, -74.85). It is situated on the southern tip of New Jersey, just north of the Atlantic Ocean. The borough is bordered by the towns of Dennis Township, Upper Township, and Sea Isle City.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all of which is land.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 708.3 per square mile (273.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $54,375. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
