Palisades Park borough Summary

Palisades Park Borough is a small borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, just north of the George Washington Bridge. The borough is bordered by Fort Lee to the south, Englewood Cliffs to the north, and Leonia to the east. The population of Palisades Park was 20,868 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Palisades Park is located at 40°50'17" North, 73°59'45" West (40.838, -73.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of which is land.
The borough is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, just north of the George Washington Bridge. It is bordered by Fort Lee to the south, Englewood Cliffs to the north, and Leonia to the east.

History

The area that is now Palisades Park was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Township of Ridgefield until 1895, when it was incorporated as the Borough of Palisades Park.
The borough was named for its location on the Palisades, a line of steep cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River. The cliffs were formed by the erosion of the Hudson River over millions of years.

Economy

The economy of Palisades Park is largely based on retail and services. The borough is home to a variety of stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The borough also has a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,868 people, 7,945 households, and 5,541 families residing in the borough. The population density was 16,072.3 people per square mile (6,179.2/km2). There were 8,541 housing units at an average density of 6,541.3 per square mile (2,521.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 57.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 33.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the borough was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
