Oaklyn Borough is a small borough located in Camden County, New Jersey. It is situated on the eastern side of the Delaware River, just north of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by Collingswood, Haddon Township, and Audubon Park. The population of Oaklyn Borough was 4,541 at the 2010 United States Census, making it the smallest municipality in Camden County.
History
Oaklyn Borough was originally part of the Township of Haddon, which was established in 1688. The area was known as “Oakland” until 1887, when it was officially incorporated as the Borough of Oaklyn. The name was derived from the abundance of oak trees in the area.
Oaklyn was a rural farming community until the early 20th century, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Philadelphia. The borough was home to several factories, including a paper mill, a glass factory, and a brickyard. The factories provided employment for many of the residents, and the population of Oaklyn increased steadily throughout the 20th century.
