Morris Plains Borough is a small borough located in Morris County, New Jersey. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 25 miles west of New York City. The borough is bordered by Parsippany-Troy Hills Township to the north, Denville Township to the east, Hanover Township to the south, and Morris Township to the west. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 5,532.
History
The area that is now Morris Plains was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of Hanover Township until 1895, when it was incorporated as a borough. The borough was named after Lewis Morris, the colonial governor of New Jersey from 1738 to 1746.
Geography
Morris Plains is located at 40°50'N 74°30'W (40.829, -74.500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of which is land.
The borough is located in the Great Appalachian Valley, which is part of the larger Ridge and Valley physiographic province of the Appalachian Mountains. The borough is located on the western edge of the Great Appalachian Valley, which is bordered by the Watchung Mountains to the east and the Kittatinny Mountains to the west.
Economy
The economy of Morris Plains is largely based on the service industry. The borough is home to several large corporations, including Honeywell, BASF, and Novartis. The borough is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 5,532 people, 2,072 households, and 1,521 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,521.2 people per square mile (973.2/km2). There were 2,207 housing units at an average density of 1,000.2 per square mile (386.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $76,944, and the median income for a family was $90,917. Males had a median income of $60,000 versus $41,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $33,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
