Midland Park Borough is a small borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is situated in the Ramapo Valley, approximately 20 miles northwest of New York City. The borough is bordered by Wyckoff to the north, Waldwick to the east, Ridgewood to the south, and Franklin Lakes to the west. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 7,128.
History
The area that is now Midland Park was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Saddle River Township until 1894, when it was incorporated as the Borough of Midland Park. The name of the borough is derived from its location between the Saddle River and the Ramapo Mountains.
Geography
Midland Park is located at 40°58'N 74°09'W (40.967, -74.150). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is located in the Ramapo Valley, and is bordered by Wyckoff to the north, Waldwick to the east, Ridgewood to the south, and Franklin Lakes to the west.
Economy
Midland Park is a primarily residential community, with a small commercial district located along Godwin Avenue. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The borough is also home to several corporate offices, including the headquarters of the Valley National Bank.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 7,128 people, 2,541 households, and 1,945 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,179.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $87,917, and the median income for a family was $103,917. Males had a median income of $71,917 versus $50,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $37,917. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 2.7% of those age 65 or over.
