Lake Como Borough is a small borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is situated on the northern shore of Lake Como, a man-made lake created in the early 1900s. The borough is bordered by Belmar to the north, Wall Township to the east, and Spring Lake Heights to the south. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 1,876.
History
The area that is now Lake Como was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The area was originally part of Wall Township, but was incorporated as its own borough in 1924. The borough was named after the lake, which was created in the early 1900s by damming the Manasquan River.
Geography
Lake Como Borough is located at 40°10'25" North, 74°02'45" West (40.173611, -74.045278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
Economy
The economy of Lake Como Borough is largely based on tourism. The borough is home to several restaurants, bars, and other businesses that cater to tourists. The borough also has a few small businesses, such as a hardware store and a pharmacy.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,876 people, 790 households, and 517 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,637.1 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 24.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $71,250. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $37,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $30,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
