Island Heights borough Summary
Island Heights Borough is a small borough located in Ocean County, New Jersey. It is situated on the Barnegat Peninsula, which is a barrier island that separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The borough is bordered by the Toms River to the north, Berkeley Township to the east, and the borough of Seaside Heights to the south. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 1,673.
History
The area that is now Island Heights was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. In the late 17th century, the area was settled by English colonists. The first permanent settlement was established in 1750 by a group of Quakers from Long Island, New York. The settlement was named Quaker Hill and was located on the northern end of the island.
In 1851, the area was incorporated as a borough and was named Island Heights. The name was chosen to reflect the borough’s location on an island in the Barnegat Bay.
In the late 19th century, Island Heights became a popular summer resort destination. The borough was home to several large hotels, including the Island Heights Hotel, the Oceanic Hotel, and the Island Heights Casino. The hotels attracted wealthy vacationers from New York City and Philadelphia.
In the early 20th century, Island Heights began to decline as a resort destination. The hotels were eventually closed and the borough’s population decreased.

Island Heights is located at 39°55'25" North, 74°10'17" West (39.923861, -74.171445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
The borough is located on the Barnegat Peninsula, which is a barrier island that separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The borough is bordered by the Toms River to the north, Berkeley Township to the east, and the borough of Seaside Heights to the south.
Economy
The economy of Island Heights is largely based on tourism. The borough is home to several popular attractions, including the Island Heights Yacht Club, the Island Heights Historical Society, and the Island Heights Cultural and Heritage Center. As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,673 people, 690 households, and 441 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,400.3 people per square mile. There were 745 housing units at an average density of 1,072.9 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
