Iselin Summary
Iselin is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the township of Woodbridge in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is a suburb of New York City and is part of the larger New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 18,695.
History
Iselin was originally part of the Raritan Township, which was established in 1798. The area was known as Iselin's Corner, named after the Iselin family who were among the first settlers in the area. The Iselin family owned a large tract of land in the area and operated a tavern and store. The area was later renamed Iselin in 1891.
In the late 19th century, Iselin was a rural farming community. The area began to develop in the early 20th century with the arrival of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The railroad provided transportation to New York City and other nearby cities, making Iselin an attractive place to live for commuters.
Geography
Iselin is located at 40°30'25" North, 74°20'45" West (40.506944, -74.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all of which is land.
Iselin is bordered by the CDPs of Colonia to the north, Avenel to the east, and Fords to the south. It is also bordered by the township of Edison to the west.
Economy
Iselin is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The largest employer in the area is the Metropark train station, which is located in Iselin and serves as a major transportation hub for commuters.
The area is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., which is located in Iselin. Other major employers in the area include the financial services company Prudential Financial, the telecommunications company Verizon, and the health care provider Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 18,695 people, 6,945 households, and 4,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,845.3 per square mile (2,259.2/km2). There were 7,323 housing units at an average density of 2,286.2 per square mile (883.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 17.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.7% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.7% of the population.
There were 6,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,917. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $41,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
