Franklin Lakes Borough is a small borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is situated in the Ramapo Mountains and is part of the New York metropolitan area. The borough is bordered by Oakland, Wyckoff, and Mahwah. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 10,590.

History

The area that is now Franklin Lakes was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Franklin Township, which was established in 1772. In 1922, the area was incorporated as the Borough of Franklin Lakes.

Geography

Franklin Lakes is located at 40°59'N 74°14'W (40.983, -74.233). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
The borough is located in the Ramapo Mountains and is part of the New York metropolitan area. It is bordered by Oakland, Wyckoff, and Mahwah.

Economy

Franklin Lakes is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses. The borough is home to several corporate headquarters, including Becton Dickinson, Quest Diagnostics, and Valley National Bank.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 10,590 people, 3,717 households, and 3,093 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,288.3 per square mile (497.3/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 467.7 per square mile (180.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.1% Native American, 9.3% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.2% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 14.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.2 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $133,917, and the median income for a family was $150,917. Males had a median income of $100,000 versus $60,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $63,917. About 1.2% of families and 1.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.7% of those under age 18 and 0.0% of those age 65 or over.
