History

The area that is now Franklin Borough was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The area was known as "Franklinville" and was part of Hardyston Township. In 1824, the area was incorporated as the Borough of Franklin. The name was chosen to honor Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Franklin Borough is located at 40°55'N 74°51'W (40.917, -74.851). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of which is land.
The borough is located in the Kittatinny Valley, which is part of the Great Appalachian Valley. The borough is bordered by the townships of Hardyston, Ogdensburg, and Hamburg.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
