Bellmawr Borough is a small borough located in Camden County, New Jersey. It is situated in the Delaware Valley region, just 8 miles east of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by Runnemede, Gloucester Township, and Barrington. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 11,583.
History
Bellmawr was originally part of the township of Centre, which was established in 1688. The area was known as Centreville until 1845, when it was renamed Bellmawr. The name is derived from the Welsh words “bell” and “mawr”, which mean “big bell”. The name was chosen to honor the Bell family, who were early settlers in the area.
In 1871, Bellmawr was incorporated as a borough. The borough was originally a farming community, but it began to grow rapidly in the early 20th century. The population increased from 1,000 in 1900 to over 10,000 by the 1950s.
Geography
Bellmawr is located at 39°49'25" North, 75°3'45" West (39.823607, -75.062545). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.3 square miles, all of which is land.
The borough is located in the Delaware Valley region, and is bordered by Runnemede, Gloucester Township, and Barrington. The borough is located 8 miles east of Philadelphia.
Economy
Bellmawr’s economy is largely based on retail and services. The borough is home to several large shopping centers, including the Bellmawr Plaza Shopping Center and the Bellmawr Towne Center. The borough is also home to several industrial parks, including the Bellmawr Industrial Park and the Bellmawr Business Park.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 11,583 people, 4,717 households, and 3,072 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,039.3 people per square mile. There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 2,142.2 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the borough was 79.2% White, 11.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $40,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
