Spanaway Summary
Spanaway is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. Spanaway is located approximately 15 miles south of Tacoma and is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Spanaway is bordered by the cities of Tacoma, Parkland, and Frederickson. The population of Spanaway was 27,227 at the 2010 census.
History
The area now known as Spanaway was originally inhabited by the Puyallup Tribe of Native Americans. The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s. The area was originally known as "Spanueuw," which is a Native American word meaning "place of the wild geese." The name was later changed to Spanaway.
The area was first settled by homesteaders in the late 1800s. The first post office was established in 1891. The area was primarily used for farming and logging until the early 1900s when the area began to be developed for residential use.
Geography
Spanaway is located at 47°9'25"N 122°25'25"W (47.156944, -122.42361). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.3 square miles, of which 11.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.9%) is water.
Economy
The economy of Spanaway is largely based on retail and services. The area is home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot. There are also several restaurants, banks, and other businesses located in the area.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 27,227 people, 9,845 households, and 6,945 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,420.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.9% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
