History

The area that is now Selah was first inhabited by the Yakama Native American tribe. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the town was officially incorporated in 1909. The name Selah is derived from the Hebrew word meaning “pause” or “reflection”.

Geography

Selah is located at 46°35′17″N 120°33′17″W (46.588, -120.555). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Selah’s economy is largely based on agriculture, with apples, cherries, and hops being the primary crops. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a Pepsi bottling plant and a Yakima Valley Dairy.

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,741 people, 2,541 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,097.8 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 2,741 housing units at an average density of 851.3 per square mile (328.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 13.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
