Port Hadlock Irondale Summary

History

Port Hadlock-Irondale is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Jefferson County, Washington, United States. It is located on the Olympic Peninsula, approximately 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Port Townsend. The population was 2,743 at the 2010 census.
The area was first settled in the late 19th century by loggers and farmers. The town was named after the nearby Port Hadlock, which was named after a local settler, William Hadlock. The Irondale portion of the CDP was named after the nearby Irondale Iron Works, which was established in 1891.
The area was originally part of the Quinault Indian Reservation, but was opened to settlement in 1891. The town was incorporated in 1909, and the Port Hadlock-Irondale area was annexed to the city in 1910.

Geography

Port Hadlock-Irondale is located at 48°3′25″N 122°45′17″W (48.056944, -122.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (2.44%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Port Hadlock-Irondale is largely based on the timber and fishing industries. The area is home to several sawmills, as well as a number of fish processing plants. The area is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,743 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 667.2 people per square mile (257.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 287.2/sq mi (110.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $43,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
