Parkland Summary

Parkland is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 35,803 at the 2010 census. Parkland is located in the south Puget Sound region of Washington, approximately 10 miles south of Tacoma and 30 miles south of Seattle.

Geography

Parkland is located at 47°10'25" North, 122°27'45" West (47.173611, -122.462500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.
The area is bordered by Spanaway to the north, Midland to the east, and Frederickson to the south. Parkland is located in the Puyallup River Valley, and is part of the Puyallup River watershed. The area is mostly flat, with some rolling hills.

History

The area now known as Parkland was originally inhabited by the Puyallup Tribe of Native Americans. The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the area was officially incorporated as a town in 1909.
The area was originally known as "Parkland Heights," and was named after the many parks in the area. The name was later shortened to "Parkland."

Economy

Parkland is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for many of the area's residents.
The area is also home to several large employers, including Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the largest military installation in the Pacific Northwest. Other major employers in the area include the Tacoma Public Schools, MultiCare Health System, and the State of Washington.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 35,803 people, 11,945 households, and 8,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,312.3 people per square mile (1,665.3/km2). There were 12,717 housing units at an average density of 1,527.3 per square mile (589.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.9% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 6.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 11,945 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
