Oakville Summary

Oakville is a small town located in Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the Chehalis River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of the county seat of Montesano. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

Oakville was founded in 1853 by a group of settlers from the Midwest. The town was named after the oak trees that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1854.
In the late 19th century, Oakville was a thriving logging and lumber town. The town was home to several sawmills, a shingle mill, and a planing mill. The town also had a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 20th century, Oakville was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to several resorts, including the Oakville Hotel, which was built in 1906. The hotel was a popular destination for visitors from Seattle and Tacoma.

Geography

Oakville is located at 46°59′N 123°25′W (46.983, -123.417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Oakville’s economy is largely based on timber and fishing. The town is home to several sawmills and a fish processing plant. The town also has a small retail sector, with several stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,717 people, 717 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.2% White, 0.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 4.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
