Navy Yard City Summary

Navy Yard City is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Tacoma, Washington, and is part of the Tacoma metropolitan area.

History

Navy Yard City was originally part of the Puyallup Indian Reservation, which was established in 1854. The area was later sold to the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1873. The railroad then sold the land to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1891. The shipyard was established in 1891 and was the first naval shipyard on the West Coast. The shipyard was used to build and repair ships for the United States Navy.
In the early 1900s, the area around the shipyard was developed as a residential neighborhood. The area was known as Navy Yard City and was home to many of the shipyard workers. The area was annexed by the City of Tacoma in 1910.

Economy

Navy Yard City is home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, which is the largest employer in the area. The shipyard is the largest industrial employer in Pierce County and is the largest naval shipyard on the West Coast. The shipyard is responsible for the maintenance and repair of ships for the United States Navy.
The area is also home to several other businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and several restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,976.3 people per square mile (1,531.2/km2). There were 3,917 housing units at an average density of 1,735.2/sq mi (669.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.9% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 4.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
