Millwood is a small city located in Spokane County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the Spokane River, just east of the city of Spokane. The population was 8,445 at the 2010 census.

History

Millwood was first settled in 1879 by a group of settlers from the Midwest. The town was originally called "Millwood Junction" because of its location at the junction of two railroads. The name was later shortened to "Millwood". The town was incorporated in 1924.
Millwood was a farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Spokane. The city has since become a bedroom community for Spokane, with many of its residents commuting to work in the city.

Geography

Millwood is located at 47°41'25" North, 117°20'17" West (47.690278, -117.338333). It is situated on the Spokane River, just east of the city of Spokane.

Millwood is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to work in Spokane. The city does have some light industry, including a few small manufacturing plants.

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,445 people, 3,521 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,006.2 people per square mile. There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 912.2 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 2.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
